In the outskirts of Bazas, about sixty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Roquetaillade château is proud of a rich history as shown by its variety of architectural styles. Roquetaillade has the particularity of being formed by two fortified castles from the 12th and 14th centuries. Firstly, look at the ramparts, towers and keeps and the elegant Renaissance chimneys, said to be the first in the region.
Then, more surprisingly, behind the medieval facade, the design of the great architect from the 19th century, Viollet-le-Duc. Note the grand staircase in the keep, based on a design rejected by the Paris Opera. In a Neo-gothic style, the rooms and little chapel of the park are decorated in bright colours and patterns, like this pink bedroom with a canopy bed and its box section ceiling. Before leaving, stop in front of the dovecote which is still in use, where the birds will delight children.
